Foreign goods worth Rs. 57 lakhs seized

CHENNAI, OCT. 10. Foreign goods worth about Rs.57 lakhs were
seized by the Flower Bazaar police from Adiapadam Street in
George Town this evening for evasion of taxes.
The consignment was released after the owner paid the tax amount
of Rs.6.40 lakhs to the Commercial Taxes Department.
According to the City Police Commissioner, Mr. K. Muthukaruppan,
acting on a tip off a police team led by the DCP (Flower Bazaar),
Mr. Mahesh Kumar Agarwal, seized the consignment.
It comprised mostly of VCD players and other electronic items.
The goods were released after the consignment owner remitted the
tax.
In another case, a Sri Lankan Tamil, Abdul Gafoor was arrested by
the police and Rs.7 lakhs seized. Mr. Agarwal said investigation
revealed that Gafoor was involved in hawala transactions.
