Imams demand lifting of SIMI ban
By Our Staff Reporter
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, OCT. 10. The Imams of various mosques in
Thiruvananthapuram district have described the ban on Students
Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) as yet another instance of the
policy of Muslim harassment being pursued by the BJP-led Central
Government.
Demanding lifting of the ban on SIMI, they pointed out that
building of a temple in the place of the demolished Babri Masjid,
describing `madrassas' as ISI centres, trying to infringe on
Shariat rules and accusing Muslims of extremist links were
indicative of the anti-Muslim and extremely communal agenda being
pursued by the BJP.
In a release here today, the Imams accused the Central
Government of actively encouraging Hindu extremist elements and
unleashing communal riots against Muslims. They said that there
was a feeling of insecurity among the Muslims and this could be
addressed only by releasing the innocents locked up in jails and
initiating other confidence-building social measures.
