Two die after inhaling poisonous gas

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, OCT. 10. Two persons died after inhaling a poisonous gas that emanated from an abandoned well at Pandyanpara, Chemburu, under the Vellarada police station limits on Tuesday night.

Police said the deceased had been identified as Vishwambaran (43), a resident of Kizhakkumkara Veedu, Manchamkode, and Jayanandan (40) of Chitra Bhavan, Pandayanpara.

The incident occurred around 10-30 p.m. when Vishwambaran ventured into the 15-foot well to retrieve a dozen-odd pots filled with wash concealed there. Jayanandan also climbed down the well. Both of them inhaled the poisonous gas and met with the same fate.

Police said one of the locals who was sent down the well in a ladder after the incident, returned half-way saying he was feeling suffocated. A torchlight that was taken down got extinguished proving that there was no oxygen in the well.

Later, Fire Force personnel, who were called in from Neyattinkara, climbed down the well with oxygen masks and fished out both the bodies after a three-hour effort in the night.

Postmortem was performed at the Medical College Hospital today and the bodies were handed over to the relatives. The Vellarada police have registered a case of unnatural death.
