Natural gas utilisation by GFCL

KAKINADA, OCT. 9. Godavari Fertilisers and Chemicals, which had revamped its di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) plant here at a cost of Rs. 100 crores, started utilising natural gas as feedstock from Tuesday, when the process was commissioned by Mr. P. V. Bhide, its managing director.

Prior to the commissioning of the process, Mr. D. K. Purwar, general manager, Gas Authority of India, which has committed to supply 30,000 cubic metres of natural gas daily on a ``fall back" basis, inaugurated the gas terminal in the GFCL complex.

The newly constructed Rs. 22 crore product storage and handling system for DAP and other NPK grade fertilizers was also inaugurated at the function. With this revamp, the Rs. 1,000- crore GFCL would be able to produce one million tonnes of fertilizer annually, including NPK, DAP and 20:20:0 phosphatic fertilizer.

As part of the modernisation, it had earlier implemented the 'pipe reactor' technology for both its A-train and B-train units, in collaboration with Incro of Spain.

According to a company release, with the substitution of LSHS (low sulphur high stock) by natural gas there will be an annual saving on fuel of Rs. 4 crores.
