We will win snap poll: UNP
COLOMBO, OCT. 11. Sri Lanka's Opposition today claimed it was all
set to storm to power in the snap polls called by the President,
Ms. Chandrika Kumaratunga, for December 5 after dissolving
Parliament on Wednesday.
``The motion of no-confidence that she ran away from last night
has been transferred from Parliament to the people, who will put
an end to her authoritarian rule,'' the United National Party
(UNP) leader, Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe, told reporters.
There will be a new government that will address the needs and
problems of the people, and the President will only be the
chairperson of the Cabinet, while we run the day-to-day
administration, he said.
The UNP said it had the support of the Tamil United Liberation
Front and a couple of other smaller Tamil parties, the Sri Lanka
Muslim Congress and the newly-formed front of rebels from the
People's Alliance.
