Bush gives another chance, Taliban mock at offer
Washington, Oct. 12. After pounding targets in the early hours of
Friday, the Pentagon indicated air operations against Afghanistan
were being slowed down on account of the Muslim holy day of Miraj
al-Nabi.
U.S., U.K. freeze Jaish assets
Washington, Oct. 12. The Bush administration has frozen the
assets of the Jaish-e-Mohammed (Army of Mohammad) as part of
widening the net on the financial assault on terrorism. In
London, Britain announced a similar freeze.
A step forward, says India
London, Oct. 12. The British Government today instructed
financial institutions to freeze the assets of the Jaish-e-
Mohammed and 37 other organisations and individuals
``believed'' to be engaged in terrorism directly or indirectly.
Powell to 'ease Indo-Pak. tensions'
Washington, Oct. 12. The U.S. Secretary of State, Gen. Colin
Powell, is travelling to Pakistan and India not merely to
``thank'' the two countries for their ``cooperation'' with the
U.S. in this war against terrorism, but to ease tensions between
India and Pakistan who are still ``shooting, shouting and glaring
at each other'' over Kashmir, if the remarks of his Deputy, Mr.
Richard Armitage, are anything to go by.
Protests in Kashmir against U.S. attacks
Srinagar, Oct. 12. A bandh was observed in Srinagar and other
parts of the Valley today in protest against the U.S. attacks in
Afghanistan. Police used teargas shells to disperse the
protesters.
Demonstrations in Delhi
New Delhi, Oct. 12. The Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid today staged a
sit- in demonstration at the Masjid complex and activists of the
Communist Party of India (Marxist) and other Left parties held an
anti-U.S. demonstration near the American Centre here.
Defence portfolio for Pant?
New Delhi, Oct. 12. The Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee,
is all set to expand, yet again, his Council of Ministers by
inducting at least two new faces. The swearing-in ceremony is
scheduled for Monday.
Peace Nobel for Annan, U.N.
Oslo, Oct. 12. The U.N. Secretary General, Mr. Kofi Annan, and
the United Nations jointly today won the centenary Nobel peace
prize in honour of their work promoting global harmony and to
stress the bedrock role the world body must play in world peace,
the Norwegian Nobel committee announced here.
Another scribe arrested
Paris, Oct. 12. A second French journalist was arrested in
Afghanistan, but was turned over to Pakistani authorities, Le
Figaro newspaper reported today. Another journalist, of Paris
Match, is being held in Afghanistan, charged with spying.
