Peace Nobel for Annan, U.N.
OSLO, OCT. 12. The U.N. Secretary General, Mr. Kofi Annan, and
the United Nations jointly today won the centenary Nobel peace
prize in honour of their work promoting global harmony and to
stress the bedrock role the world body must play in world peace,
the Norwegian Nobel committee announced here.
``For 100 years, the Norwegian Nobel committee has sought to
strengthen organised cooperation between states. The end of the
cold war has at last made it possible for the U.N. to perform
more fully the part it was originally intended to play,'' it
said.
Noting that Mr. Annan had devoted most of his working life to the
U.N. it said that as the Secretary General he had been ``pre-
eminent in bringing new life to the organisation''.
Mr. Annan said the prize, is ``a great encouragement'' but also a
challenge to the organisation. ``It challenges us to do more and
to do better,'' Mr. Annan told reporters outside his home.
