Compelling evidence?
Sir, - The fact that the once hesitant NATO and other nations
gave the go-ahead to the U.S. shows that the evidence against
Osama bin Laden and his Al- Qaeda was compelling. After hearing
the obdurate and gruesome statements of continued and escalated
terrorism in the U.S. and the sheltering of Osama by the Taliban,
one must be really naive to believe that had the evidence been
presented, the Taliban would have handed over Osama or terminated
its ``wipe out the infidels'' mission. The Taliban has a warped
mindset which no negotiation can straighten. The U.S. and its
allies are justified in launching the attack on Afghanistan.
Joel Samuel,

* * *
Sir, - It is a fact that Osama is an old friend of the U.S. and
the creation of the FBI, and now the most wanted person -`dead or
alive' - as rightly mentioned by Mr. Mohammed Ali Siddiqui in his
letter on October 11. Mr. Siddiqui wants evidence of Osama's
involvement. It is a very genuine demand. Let Osama face the
court and prove the U.S. wrong. He has all the money at his
disposal to plead not guilty. While most Islamic countries treat
their terrorists mercilessly without any trial worth its name,
Osama will at least be tried in a country which has a transparent
legal system.
