Policy in self-interest
Sir,- This refers to `America, oil and Afghanistan' (Oct. 13) by
Mr. Sitaram Yechury. While the author's contention that America's
war against terrorism is a shield to establish its control over
the oil resources and strengthen its economy cannot be ruled out,
India's support to the U.S. is specific in that it is limited to
the fight against global terrorism. Considering the support
Pakistan gets from the U.S., even when it is aiding and abetting
terrorism, India has to necessarily keep a tab on both the U.S.
and Pakistan in its own interest.
To lend credence to its stated position that its fight is against
global terrorism and does not stop with Afghanistan, the U.S.
must address India's concern arising from the terrorist
activities engineered from across the border.
V.S. Jayaraman,
Chennai
Sir, - The article by Mr. Yechury brings out the hidden agenda of
the U.S. As Washington has already established supremacy over the
Islamic countries/the oil world by investing huge sums, it has to
control other regimes which do not conform and suppress them by
any means. If it fails to establish control over them, it will be
a disaster for its economic status and will pave the way for
other Islamic countries to follow the Taliban.
R. Devanath,
Tirupati, AP
