Facts about Nobel

Sir, - Immanuel Nobel invented plywood. His son, Alfred Nobel, invented dynamite - the precursor to terrorism all over the world. At that time, over twenty countries allowed him to establish his laboratories, without knowing that his invention was going to wreck the whole world within a couple of centuries.

He met with an accident and his relatives published his obituary criticising him. Alfred Nobel, who had the unique opportunity of reading his own obituary, later wrote his will to honour eminent persons.

There have been instances of awarding a wrong person, recognising a wrong theory and nominees declining the award. For instance, in 1925, when the Nobel literature prize was awarded to George Bernard Shaw, he said he was famous even before being nominated.
