'Karnataka letting adequate water into Mettur Dam'

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE, OCT. 15. Karnataka has ensured the flow of more than one tmcft (thousand million cubic feet) water into the Mettur Dam in Tamil Nadu everyday since September 6, according to the Karnataka Minister for Water Resources, Mr. H.K. Patil.

He said Karnataka had convinced the Cauvery River Authority that it had provided water to Tamil Nadu as suggested by the monitoring committee. More than 15 tmcft water was let into the Mettur Dam before September end.

Participating in a `meet the press' programme, Mr. Patil said there was no need for any anxiety on the part of Tamil Nadu in view of the heavy rainfall in that State this month. In contrast, Karnataka was facing drought. Though the recent rains had improved the situation to an extent, rainfall was not adequate in Kodagu and the Cauvery catchment area. Several efforts had been made to ensure that the farmers in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu did not suffer.
