New S.N. Trust Board to have 854 members

KOLLAM, OCT. 15. The election process for constituting the new
S.N. Trust Board began at the trust office here this morning. The
new board which will come into existence on January 29, 2002 for
a three-year term will have 854 members. The existing board has
799 members and this means that the new board will have an
addition of 55 members.
Notification for the election was issued on September 12 last
under which the final voters list would be published on November
5. The election will be held in four phases in January.
This morning, those in the voters list were given the opportunity
for requesting any shift in their names from the existing region
to another region. Complaints regarding the voters list can be
filed tomorrow and the day after tomorrow.
The 854 members are a congregation from seven broad categories.
They are the hereditary members, three categories of donors, the
S.N.D.P. Yogam office-bearers and their nominees, a nominee from
the Sivagiri Madhom and representatives from institutions.
There are 13 hereditary members and they would come into the
board without contesting the election. Similarly, in the donors
category, there are 196 persons who have donated a minimum of Rs.
1 lakh each towards the Trust and they are entitled to
automatically become members of the board.
The rest in the donors category of the electoral college has been
classified into two. The first category comprises those who have
donated between Rs. 100 and Rs. 500 each to the Trust. The voters
in this category will elect 514 members to the board. However, in
this category only those who have donated Rs. 500 are eligible to
contest. This category is divided into 10 regions and the
Varkala region will send the highest number of
representatives, 93, to the board. The other regions are,
Thiruvananthapuram-50, Kollam-84, Punalur-54, Nangyarkulangara-
65, Cherthala-35, Thrissur-27, Palakkad-30, Kozhikode-38 and
Kannur-38.
The next category of voters are those who have donated between
Rs. 501 and Rs. 5,000. They will elect 115 representatives to the
board. Here again, only those who have donated a minimum of Rs.
5,000 each are eligible to contest.
The Yogam president and general secretary are ex officio members
of the board and the Yogam council will nominate seven members to
the board. Institutions which have donated a fixed amount to the
Trust can together nominate six members to the board and with a
nominee from the Sivagiri Madhom the figure touches 854. The
board members have the option to elect or nominate three expert
members.Election for the 514 representatives from the Rs. 500
category will be held on January 12, 2002. The 115
representatives from the Rs. 5,000 category will be elected on
January 20. If the option for having the three technical members
arises then the election or nomination would be held on January
28 and the election for the chairman, secretary, assistant
secretary, treasurer and executive committee from among the 853
members will be held on January 29. Mr. P. Santosh Kumar from
Eranakulam has been appointed chief returning officer.
