Overview of the armaments industry
SPS MILITARY YEAR BOOK since 1965 2001: J. Baranwal
Editor; Guide Publications, P.B. 2525, New Delhi-110005. Rs.
1725.
THIS IS an interesting publication that has readable material on
the strategic concepts, nuclear weapons and technological
developments in the armaments industry.
Photos of major weapon systems are used as adjunct to various
chapters.
For the military readers the portion on our nuclear programmes
and the research and development projects would provide an
interesting update.
Obviously, the publishers could not divulge some classified
projects, which are in the incubation stage.
The special article on Afghanistan gives us an overview of the
Afghan machinery, its strengths and weaknesses.
On the chapters pertaining to India's defence forces, the editor
has presented a complete outline of strength, armament inventory
and its order of the battle with emphasis on new acquisitions.
Chapter six gives a brief overview of the defence structure and
weaponry of other countries in Asia, Middle East and the Pacific
region.
The feature on military equipment has adequate details of all the
important weapons that are available with the major military
powers. Major weapon sales have been incorporated with details.
The diagrams and graphs on various defence structures and
organisations are neatly drawn and they provide clarity and easy
absorption.
A must addition for all defence units, establishments and "arms
trade sectors' libraries."
