By Our Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD, OCT. 16. About 18 persons were killed and train
services between Chennai and Gudur were suspended for a few hours
and thousands were rendered homeless due to heavy rain and the
cyclonic storm which crossed the coast near Sulurpet at 8.30 a.m.
today.
Cuddapah town saw the worst inundation in recent memory and most
parts of the town lay under waist-deep water. The lifting of four
crest gates at Buggavanka dam added to the misery as all colonies
lying along the banks of the canal system were flooded. Sulurpet
received 26 cm of rain in 24 hours till 8.30 a.m., while Nellore
got 25 cm. G>The cyclone weakened and started to dissipate after
crossing the coast.
Trains between Renigunta and Cuddapah were suspended as the track
lay under water. Vijayawada-Chennai trains were stopped at Gudur.
Traffic on National Highway No. 5 between Chennai and Kolkata
came to a standstill near Gudur.
