NAM meet cancelled
DHAKA, OCT. 16. The Bangladesh Government headed by the Prime
Minister, Begum Khaleda Zia, has cancelled the summit of the Non-
Aligned Movement (NAM) countries scheduled to be held here next
year.
The decision to cancel the biggest international event in the
country was taken at the first meeting of the new Cabinet held on
Monday night since the installation of the BNP-led Government on
October 10.
The decision not to hold the summit was taken in view of the
global political scenario (in the wake of the U.S.-led strikes on
Afghanistan) and the financial condition of Bangladesh, an
official spokesman said.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been asked to take necessary
steps in this regard, the BSS news agency reported.
The 13th summit of the NAM, established as a middle path during
the cold war years, was proposed to be held in Dhaka in April. In
August, a $50 million summit venue was also completed for the
event.
