By Our Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD, OCT. 16. Dr. K. V. Raghavan, Director of Indian
Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad, has been appointed a
member of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB).
The AERB was set up in 1983 to enforce safety-related rules in
respect of manufacture, storage and import of hazardous chemicals
in the nuclear facilities. The objective is to ensure that the
presence of ionising radiation and nuclear energy do not cause
unacceptable impact on the members of public, health of workers
and the environment in the country, according to a press release.
The Board issues licences and authorisations for siting,
constructions, commissioning, operation and decommissioning of
nuclear facilities and monitors the emergency preparedness in all
nuclear and radiation facilities and maintains liaison with
regulatory bodies in India and abroad. It is also responsible for
the safety surveillance of 14 nuclear power plants, various heavy
water and other nuclear installations.
