Ideological solution
Sir, - Mr. Mushirul Hasan's article `The task ahead' (Oct. 15) is
timely and thought- provoking. As he aptly remarked, the point to
stress is that the West is neither a unified entity nor is it
inimical to Islam. Conversely, the ideology of Islam is not
antithetical to the Western ideas and institutions''. The
terrorists have no faith in religion and the war against them is
not a war on religion.
Those who master-minded the attacks on September 11 against the
WTC and the Pentagon had low-cost warfare using domestic planes
against the high-cost war which the U.S. and its allies have
started. Instead of a prolonged and costly war resulting in the
death of innocent people, the alternative approach of forging an
ideological rather than a military coalition appears to be better
for ensuring lasting peace.
K. Ramamurthi,
