Anthrax: U.S. House shut down
By Sridhar Krishnaswami
WASHINGTON, OCT. 17. In an unprecedented move, the U.S. House of
Representatives was shut down today for an ``environmental
sweep''. This, after at least 31 persons in the Senator Mr. Tom
Daschle's office tested positive for anthrax exposure.
The Speaker, Mr. Dennis Hastert, said the anthrax found in the
Senate mailroom had got into the ``ventilation system''.
Some Senators said the House leadership over-reacted to the
threat.
In a Senate testimony, the Secretary of Health and Human
Services, Mr. Tommy Thompson, said ``There is no question, this
is a very serious attempt at anthrax poisoning''.
Separately, the office of the New York Governor in Manhattan has
been proved to have traces of anthrax.
