Sedition case against JUI leader
By B. Muralidhar Reddy
ISLAMABAD, OCT. 17. The Musharraf Government is said to have
registered a case of sedition against the leader of the
Jamait-ul-ulema-I-Islami (JUI) faction leader, Maulana Fazulur
Rehman.
Reports from Dera Islamil Khan said police registered the case
against him for ``instigating the people against the government
and the army''. The JUI faction has been in the forefront of
street protests in the last few days against the decision of the
Musharraf regime to side with the U.S.-led military campaign
against the Taliban militia and Osama bin Laden.
Last week, the Government had put the Maulana under house arrest
but freed him later on demand from his supporters.
The military government is faced with a difficult task given the
general anti-American sentiment across the country. The challenge
faced by Gen. Musharraf could grow if the American-led military
campaign gets prolonged.
