Rubbing salt on the wound
Sir, - It is quite depressing to note that Mr. Vajpayee has
stooped to the level of inducting a tainted individual as Defence
Minister. If Mr. Vajpayee felt that Mr. Fernandes's
``competence'' was so indispensable in the country's interests,
he could have appointed him in some advisory capacity to the
Defence Minister. The Prime Minister's argument that nothing
concrete has come out against Mr. Fernandes so far in the
Venkataswamy Commission is like rubbing salt on the wound. A
dubious precedence of sorts has been set for which the Prime
Minister will be accountable to the country and future.
N.S. Sankararaman,
Chennai
Sir, - What is common between Mullah Mohammad Omar and Mr. George
Fernandes? Mullah Omar asks the U.S. to provide evidence about
Osama bin Laden's involvement in the attacks in New York and
Washington, Mr. Fernandes challenges the Opposition to produce
evidence to prove he is guilty of corruption instead of
``shouting in the streets and Parliament''.
A.K. Dasgupta,
Hyderabad
