Humpy is champion, but misses out on GM norm

HYDERABAD, OCT. 17. World junior champion, Koneru Humpy, emerged champion in the First Saturday Grandmasters chess tournament after forcing GM Goran Todorovic to a draw in the final round at Budapest, according to information received here tonight.

The Vijayawada girl won the title tallying 7.5 points, while Hungarians IM Peter Horvath and IM Attila Jakob finished joint second.

However, the Bank of Baroda-sponsored Humpy's dreams of achieving her second Grandmaster norm in the men's section were dashed last night itself when she drew her 10th round game with Attila Jakob. She badly needed to win the last two rounds to realise her first objective.

Humpy will now be leaving for Belgrade to take part in the Third Saturday Grandmasters tournament commencing on October 20.
