3 more trauma centres soon
By Our Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI, OCT. 17.
The Delhi Health Minister, Dr.A.K. Walia, today announced that
three more trauma centres, equipped with state-of-the-art
technology, are being set up in the Capital to deal with the
increasing number of accident cases and those requiring
specialised neuro and orthopedic surgery. These centres would be
in addition to the already existing Shushrut Trauma Centre.
Stating that the aim was to decentralise the network of trauma
management, Dr. Walia said one centre had started functioning
from today at the GTB Hospital in East Delhi, one 140-bed Trauma
Centre was proposed to be set up in the Deen Dayal Upadhaya
Hospital at Hari Nagar in West Delhi shortly and a 100-bed Trauma
Centre was expected to come up in Vasant Kunj area of South
Delhi.
The 40-bed Trauma Centre at GTB had been equipped with latest CT
scan machine and would cater to treatments like gynaecologic,
maternity and family welfare. The CT Scan and MRI facility had,
for the first time, been started at the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash
Hospital.
Dr. Walia said when he took over, there was a shortage of
hospitals which functioned round the clock. Only six hospitals
were providing 24-hour services which was insufficient for such a
large population. At that time itself, it was decided that this
aspect needed to be tackled.
The new Trauma Centres would have the services of CATS ambulances
and would also act as disaster management centres in case of
emergency. In addition, it had also been decided to set up blood
banks at all centres to provide on-the-spot help to patients.
At the same time, Dr. Walia said the idea to come up with more
Trauma Centres was to decentralise the whole process of emergency
and specialised treatment. In the present circumstances, patients
are being rushed to the Shushrut Trauma Centre from all parts of
the city. With such Centres coming up in various parts of the
Capital, the accident victims could now be rushed to the nearest
Centre so that treatment is provided on time and in an efficient
manner. Such Centres have become more a necessity in a city like
Delhi which has a population of around 1.40 crores and over 30
lakh vehicles.
With regard to the trans-Yamuna area, Dr. Walia said the Lal
Bahadhur Shastri Hospital at Khichripur had started functioning
to its full capacity of 100 beds. The construction of another
100-bed Dr. Hedgewar Arogya Sansthan was going on and it was
expected the OPD would start functioning from March next year.
The entire hospital is expected to be made functional by the end
of 2002. Construction work on the super speciality hospital at
Tahirpur, the Child Specialist Hospital at Geeta Colony and
General Hospital at Shastri Park would be started by this year
itself, and these are expected to be commissioned by 2003.
