14 washed away in Guntur dt.

GUNTUR, OCT. 18. As many as 14 persons, including 13 women, were
washed away today in the flash floods of the Gundlakamma river
near Tellabadu village of Nuzendla mandal in Guntur district.
According to reports, 26 persons - some are farmers and some farm
labourers - were crossing the river on foot around 6.30 pm. All
of them went for farm works to the other side of the bank in the
morning. They normally cross the river with the help of a bamboo
log fitted across the river course. The flow was not much when
they went in the morning. While they were returning, water was
coming into the river course with heavy currents. While they were
crossing the river, the bamboo log got broken resulting in the
disaster.
Twelve persons could cross the river while 14 others were washed
away. One body is said to be afloat on the gushing waters,
according to eye-witness.
The Nuzendla Mandal Revenue Officer, Mr. Rama Rao, the Vinukonda
MLA, Mr. V. Yellamanda Rao, the Vinukonda CI, Mr. Ramachandraiah,
and others were making efforts to launch search operation.
Meanwhile, the District Collector, Mr. Hiralal Samariya, and the
Superintendent of Police, Mr. J. Purnachandra Rao, rushed to the
scene.
