India qualifies for World championship
CHENNAI, OCT. 18. The 2001 World bridge championships, comprising
the Bermuda Bowl, Venice Cup, Seniors Bowl, and Transnational
Open team competition, will be held in Paris, France from October
21 to November 3.
India, by winning the Bridge Federation of Asia and Middle East
Bridge Championship (BFAME) trials in Bahrain this year, has
qualified for the Bermuda Bowl, the symbol of supremacy in
bridge, held every alternate year.
India will be represented by Ms. Kiran Nadar, Satyanarayana,
Rajesh Dalal, Subhash Gupta, K.R. Venkataraman and B. Prabhakar.
This is only the second time in the last five decades that India
has qualified for the event.
India, again by virtue of its triumph in Bahrain, will compete in
the Venice Cup, awarded to the winner of the zonal competition
for women players.
The Indian team is Bimal Sicka, Maiam Karmakar, Yvitil
Singapurian, Geetha Lakhani, Feroza Chotia, and Ameeta Raythatha.
This is the seventh occasion in the last three decades that India
has earned the right to compete in the World championships.
