By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, OCT. 21. The DMK candidate for Chennai Mayor post, Mr. M.K.Stalin, was leading over his closest AIADMK rival, Mr. N.Balaganga, by 7,844 votes when reports last came in at 8 p.m. on Sunday. The AIADMK and DMK fronts were evenly tied with 21 seats each in the Chennai Corporation council.

Mr. Stalin had polled 1,09,202 votes, to 1,01,358 votes for Mr.Balaganga till late evening. The AIADMK and the DMK had won 19 council seats each, while its allies, the CPI and the TMC, won one seat each. The DMK Front's ally, the BJP had won two seats. This apart, two Independents had won council seats.

According to sources, the AIADMK Mayoral candidate Mr. N.Balaganga with 81,290 votes, was leading over Mr. M.K.Stalin at 6-30 p.m. by 197 votes. As the counting progressed, the AIADMK candidate increased his lead by about 3,000 votes. However, Mr. Stalin narrowed down the difference by evening, and later widened the gap by about 8,000 votes.

One of the possible reasons could be the entry of Congress Mayoral candidate, Mr. H.Vasanthkumar, who cut a sizable chunk of the electorate with 11,711 votes. Trends till late afternoon, showed the DMK candidates leading in the Mayoral and council polls.
