Anthrax dose distribution taken up in Prakasam

By Our Staff Reporter

ONGOLE, OCT. 22. The district Animal Husbandry Department has begun distributing preventive doses of anthrax at R. Lakshmipuram and its surrounding villages in Santhanuthalapadu mandal, which has reported anthrax cases among sheep and goats recently.

A total of 10,500 cases of anthrax vaccination arrived in the district on Monday and the administration began distributing the doses in R. Lakshmipuram, Rudravaram, Guruvareudypalem, Chalapapalem and Mynampadu, Mr. M. Suribabu, Joint Director, Animal Husbandry, said.

Anthrax which is known as `dommara vyadhi' or `netturu kattu vyadhi' in local parlance and caused by bascilies Anthrasis bacteria is not new to the district. Every year, at least 10 cases of anthrax get detected among sheep and goats. The prominent symptoms of the disease are swollen eyes and stomach. Blood, black in colour, comes out of nostrils and anus and it does not clot.

Mr. Suribabu said treatment for anthrax was easy but emphasised that diagnosis was important. If the disease was not detected immediately the animal would die in two or three hours. Besides anthrax, other diseases which were commonly found among cattle in the district are rabis, `braucellosis' and leptospirosis.

Hoemorrhagic septiciomic known as `gonthuvapu vyadhi' locally is also spreading across the State. In all, 2.5 lakh doses had been distributed covering one-fourth of the total 10 lakh cattle in the district so far, Mr. D. Shyamala Rao, Assistant Director, Animal Health Centre, said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Suribabu appealed to people to contact his office at phone Nos. 33168, 33239 or 39609, if anthrax or any other diseases were reported.
