Need for restraint
Sir, - Your Editorial (Oct. 22) rightly underlines the need for
strategic restraint on India's part in dealing with Pakistan vis-
a-vis the Kashmir issue. We need not unnecessarily become hawkish
about the growing U.S.-Pakistan entente. Whether we like it or
not, Pakistan has emerged as the biggest player in the current
Afghan crisis. Pakistan is important to the U.S. only till it
wipes out the Afghanistan-based terrorist outfits.
Once this objective is achieved, the U.S. may find Pakistan an
unnecessary burden, as it did over a decade ago after the Russian
occupation of Afghanistan came to an end. India, with its huge
market for consumer goods, always stands a good chance of making
it to the America's favoured nations list, if that is what we
want. So, the right strategy for us would be to maintain a
diplomatic silence.
Raghav Venkatesh,
Gulbarga
