Armed men attack church in Pak., kill 17
Islamabad, Oct. 28. A group of persons opened indiscriminate fire
in a church at Bahawalpur in Punjab province today, killing 17
persons, including a policeman outside the church.
Security forces storm mosque
Srinagar, Oct. 28. Security forces today stormed a mosque in
Budgam district of central Kashmir to flush out a militant holed
up in the shrine, official sources said.
Air raids kill 13 civilians
Kabul, Oct. 28. American airstrikes, meant to ``punish'' the
Taliban, spilled over into residential areas of the Afghan
capital today, killing 13 civilians. The mis-directed raids were
the second such fatal error in as many days, coming only 12 hours
after the apparent stray bombardment behind the opposition
military alliance's battle lines north of Kabul on Saturday.
Pak. for resuming talks on 'Agra format'
Islamabad, Oct. 28. The Pakistan President, Gen. Pervez
Musharraf, today expressed a desire for resumption of dialogue
with India ``by reviving the format'' agreed upon at the Agra
Summit in July.
U.N. envoy in Pakistan
Islamabad, Oct. 28. The U.N. Special Envoy for Afghanistan, Mr.
Lakhdar Brahimi, arrived in Pakistan today to seek Afghan views
on forming a broad-based government to replace the Taliban. The
former Algerian minister, who quit the mediation role two years
ago in frustration but has now been named chief envoy for
Afghanistan, will continue on to Iran later in the week, U.N.
officials said.
Koshiari may be Uttaranchal CM
New Delhi, Oct. 28. The Uttaranchal Power Minister, Mr. Bhagat
Singh Koshiari, appears to have emerged as the dark horse and is
likely to be the new Chief Minister of the State.
Deendar ban upheld
New Delhi, Oct. 28. The Centre's decision to ban the Deendar
Anjuman as an unlawful association during April this year has
been upheld by a tribunal.
7 policemen gunned down
Guwahati, Oct. 28. Seven policemen were killed and four others
injured when unidentified militants opened fire on them in lower
Assam's Dhubri district on Saturday night, the police said here
today.
Quake rocks Afghanistan
New Delhi, Oct. 28. A moderate earthquake with a magnitude of 5.0
on the Richter scale rocked the Hindukush mountains in
Afghanistan early today, the meteorological department said here
U.S. flags burnt
Jaipur, Oct. 28. Over 25,000 people, affiliated to the Rajasthan
Muslim Forum, today offered a pro-Afghanistan namaz and burnt
American flags in the city protesting the U.S. attacks on
Afghanistan.
