New transport policy by year-end: Minister
By Our Special Correspondent
BANGALORE, OCT. 29. The State Government will announce a new
comprehensive transport policy by the year-end.
Participating in a meet-the-press programme here on Monday, the
Minister for Transport, Mr. Sageer Ahmed, said the draft of the
new policy was being given final touches by the Transport
Department.
Listing the achievements of his department during the past two
years, Mr. Ahmed said there was an ambitious plan to provide
transport links to about 5,000 villages in the State. The Chief
Minister, Mr. S.M. Krishna, had evinced keen interest in ensuring
transport facilities in all parts of the State.
Regarding the working of the district-level regional transport
offices (RTOs), Mr. Ahmed said efforts were being taken to bring
about all-round improvement of these offices including
computerisation. Computerisation of RTOs was proceeding at a
brisk pace and the five RTOs in Bangalore had already been
computerised.
Claiming that the working of the Karnataka State Road Transport
Corporation (KSRTC) and the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport
Corporation (BMTC) had improved a lot during the past two years,
Mr. Ahmed said 3,000 new buses were added to the fleet. Referring
to the functioning of driving schools, Mr. Ahmed said efforts
were being made to regulate the schools.
With the collaboration of the Health Department, 46 trauma
centres had been established near accident-prone spots on
national and State highways. More such centres would be
established soon, he added.
