She gifted life from her deathbed

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, OCT. 29. She gave them a new existence even as she breathed her last.

A 57-year-old woman with six children, who died of a stroke, gifted a new lease of life to two patients with renal disease by donating her kidneys, here on Thursday.

When the family of the woman from Chitradurga was informed that she would not survive her illness, they decided to do a good deed by donating her kidneys as well as cornea to someone in need.

They contacted Dr. Arunodaya, neurologist at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), who got in touch with the Foundation for Organ Retrieval and Transplant Education (FORTE) to do the needful. Thanks to the concerted efforts of members of her family, doctors at NIMHANS, FORTE, and a team of surgeons at St. John's Hospital, the organs were retrieved and transplanted successfully. The tissue-typing laboratory at the Rotary-TTK Blood Bank worked through the night to find out which of the persons in need of transplantation was the best candidate to receive the gift of life.

The recipients were a 34-year-old man with two children, who was operated upon at St. John's Hospital, and a 11-year old boy, for whom kidney transplantation was performed at the Bangalore Kidney Hospital. Both patients are doing well, a press release from FORTE says.

FORTE, which is the only one of its kind, is a non-profit organisation through which organ donations and transplants are coordinated. It is a medical service working with centres for

cadaveric transplantation recognised by the Government. FORTE, which maintains a list of patients awaiting transplants, can be contacted on phone (2237045).
