New air surveillance system in Chennai, Kolkata
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI,OCT.31. The Airports Authority of India (AAI), has put
into operation the new Automatic Dependent Surveillance System
(ADS) at the ATC Centers at Kolkata and Chennai airports. The
system has been developed for AAI by ECIL, Hyderabad.
The latest in the air surveillance and navigation technology, the
satellite-based system enables the controllers to monitor the
flight movement of an aircraft over oceanic airspace well beyond
the reach of any RADAR system.
An interim system was installed at Kolkata in 1997. Now,
following the introduction of this new technology, India has
become the second country after New Zealand in the world to
install the state-of-the art-technology to enhance its air safety
measures.
The ADS helps the ATC on ground to monitor the flight movement of
an aircraft through the flight management system installed in the
aircraft. The pilot, while passing through an airspace, logs on
the ADS Centre with the help of the flight management system.
Once logged on the ADS automatically provides the controller on
ground the entire information as well as the flight movement at
any given time.
An aircraft is authorised to log on with one control station. The
air-ground communication is done through data link instead of
voice.
