AIADMK wins chairmanship in majority of unions
By P.V.V. Murthi
VELLORE, OCT. 31. Even as the AIADMK captured the chairmanship of
14 out of the 18 panchayat unions in Vellore district for which
the indirect elections were held on Wednesday, the election in
Alangayam panchayat union was postponed following violent
incidents indulged in allegedly by AIADMK workers.
In Tiruvannamalai district, the AIADMK candidates won the
chairmanship of a maximum of nine panchayat unions, followed by
seven by the DMK and one each by the PMK and an Independent
supported by the AIADMK.
Barring the Alangayam incident, the indirect elections in Vellore
district passed off peacefully. It was stated that when Mr. K.
Devaraj, AIADMK candidate for the post of chairman of Alangayam
panchayat union, was nearing the panchayat union office along
with 10 other union councillors who were his supporters in a car
at 8.50 a.m., the vehicle was waylaid and attacked allegedly by
persons belonging to the AIADMK.
The occupants of the car including Mr. Devaraj ran into the
council hall where they were locked up by the office staff in
order to protect them from the violent mob.
Later a 500-strong mob of AIADMK workers allegedly entered the
panchayat union office and council hall and damaged the
furniture, windows and doors. They also attacked the DMK workers
who had gathered there.
Talking to newspersons here, Mr. Devaraj said that five DMK
members including Mr. Gopal, Vellore district panchayat ward
member, and Mr. M. Munivelu, district panchayat ward member, were
injured in the attack.
The police led by Mr. Rajarathinam, Vaniyambadi DSP arrived only
an hour later, he said.
Meanwhile, the manager of the panchayat union office announced on
behalf of the returning officer (RO) for the election over the
mike at 11 a.m. that the election was being postponed. At 11.30
a.m., he gave a petition to the RO seeking the reasons for
postponement and demanding the holding of the election as
scheduled since the required quorum of 11 members (out of the
total council strength of 18) was available.
But the RO reportedly said that he was suffering from chest pain
and did not know what was happening. Later the DMK councillors
were escorted to safety out of the panchayat union office by the
police.
They later went to Vellore and submitted a memorandum to the
Collector demanding action against the culprits and holding of
the election soon.
The police however denied the version given by Mr. Devaraj.
According to police sources, Mr. Devaraj had allegedly
`kidnapped' Ms. A. Ranjitha, an Independent and detained her for
the past six days in order to get her support for his election as
chairman of the union and prevent her from being wooed by the
rival camp.
When a relative of Ms. Ranjitha who hails from the Peddanur Adi
Dravida colony died, the information was conveyed to her, but she
did not visit the colony to condole the death.
Angered at this, the residents of the Peddanur colony had waylaid
the car of Mr. Devaraj today for his failure to `release' her to
attend the funeral of the relative.
This version was denied by Mr. Devaraj. However, the police have
registered a case against some AIADMK persons on a complaint
lodged by him.

a lodge here today to ensure victory for the PMK nominee in
Cuddalore union.
``We ensured that the PMK nominee wins the chairmanship election
with support from the Independents,'' said one of the cadres.
The PMK nominee won the election by a margin of just one vote.

returned the party's nominee as the Chairman.
