18-vote margin for Thyagarajan

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, OCT. 31. The AIADMK councillor, Mr. `Karate' R. Thyagarajan, was on Wednesday elected the Deputy Mayor of Chennai Corporation by a margin of 18 votes over the DMK contender, Ms. Shankaravalli.

Mr. Thyagarajan, elected to the Council from Division 155 (Thiruvanmiyur East), polled 84 votes in a house of 154 councillors, while his DMK counterpart could garner only 66.

The lone MDMK councillor and an Independent absented themselves from the Council while a DMK corporator, Anandan, elected from Division 99, passed away recently, leaving the seat vacant. Two votes were declared invalid.

The result did not come as a surprise as the AIADMK- TMC-CPI commanded a majority in the House, together tallying 83 councillors.

Mr. Thyagarajan, however, has a petition calling for a recount of votes in his Ward, pending with the Principal Sessions Judge's court.
