Another feather in Humpy's cap
HYDERABAD, OCT. 31. World junior champion Koneru Humpy won the
third Saturday GM chess tournament splitting the point with
Todorov Ognjan of Bulgaria in the final round to top the table
with 8.5 points.
The fourteen-year-old, who won the second GM norm in the 9th
round, was tied at 8.5 points with Stojenovic Mihagilo of
Yugoslavia but since Humpy had defeated him in the fifth round,
the title was awarded to the Indian.
Humpy, who became the first Indian Woman Grandmaster to have two
GM norms, played king's Indian attack and settled for a draw in
eleven moves.
She now has the 11-round GM norm for garnering 8.5 points for the
category-seven GM tournament, with six wins and five draws. After
the victory Humpy said ``this third Saturday tournament is more
gratifying for me as I won the second GM norm and also I did not
lose a single game.''
The ninth-standard Andhra Pradesh girl had earlier won the first
Saturday GM chess tournament held at Budapest.
