Divine radiance

THE TEMPLE dedicated to Lord Suryanarayana in the Old Pallavaram agraharam, which was consecrated two years ago by the Yajnavalkya Sabha in commemoration of the great Sage, attracts a steady stream of devotees.

At the entrance is Lord Yoga Ganapati whom devotees believe showers luck and abundant blessings. Inside there are three parallel sannidhis. The sannidhi in the centre is that of Yogisvara Yagnavalkya, the Brahmarishi, who is said to have brought to earth the `Shukla Yajurveda' from the Sun God and disseminated the light of Vedic wisdom for the welfare of humankind. His two consorts Katyayani and Maitreyi are seen by his side.

To the right of the seer is the sannidhi of Goddess Gayatri with five faces and ten hands, two of which depict abhaya and varada. The third sannidhi is that of the lustrous Lord Suryanarayana, the king of the galaxy of nine planets, who, as the legend goes, is said to have enlightened Yajnavalkya. Lord Suryanarayana is worshipped as the giver of life and health to all beings.

The treasurer of the sabha, Mr. Ramamoorthy, says devotees throng the temple on Sundays, Tuesdays and Fridays which are considered auspicious days. However, special pujas are performed on all days. Books on Yajnavalkya, cassettes and CDs of the Shukla Yajurveda and Isavasya Ghanam and the Brhadaranyakopanishad are available at the shrine at a nominal cost. A corpus fund has been created to ensure performance of daily puja, adds Mr. Srinivasan, Sabha secretary.

Donations to the shrine or to the Nitya Puja Trust can be sent to the Secretary, Sri Yajnavalkya Sabha, Old No. 32/New No.78, Perumal Koil Street, Saidapet. Devotees can also contact 4851309 for details.
