Verdict reserved in TANSI cases
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, NOV. 1. The judgment in the `TANSI land deals cases', on
which hinges the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Ms.
Jayalalithaa's political prospects, was reserved in the Madras
High Court today. After hearing arguments for 18 days since
October 1, Mr. Justice N. Dinakar reserved the orders in the
cases, in which Ms. Jayalalithaa and her close friend, Ms.
Sasikalaa, are the main accused.
Following her conviction in these cases by a Special Court here
in 2000, Ms. Jayalalithaa was disqualified from contesting the
Assembly elections in the State in April this year.
The case pertains to the purchase of the State-run TANSI
foundry's land by two private companies jointly owned by Ms.
Jayalalithaa and Ms. Sasikalaa. The controversial transaction
took place in 1991-92 when Ms. Jayalalithaa was the Chief
Minister.
Hearings in the `Pleasant Stay Hotel case' will be taken up on
November 9.
