Plane diverted
DETROIT, NOV. 1. A Northwest Airlines passenger jet, escorted by
two U.S. military fighter jets, was diverted to Detroit's metro
airport today after the pilot reported a security problem aboard
the aircraft. A spokesperson for the airline, Ms. Kathy Peach,
said a passenger aboard Flight 191 - an airbus A320 with 78
people - headed for Minneapolis from Washington's Reagan national
airport, discovered a note apparently tucked into an on-flight
magazine suggesting a threat to the aircraft.
The pilot then informed flight controllers that he was diverting
the flight to Detroit as a precautionary measure, Ms. Peach said.
His call prompted the military to dispatch two F-16s to accompany
the airbus on its approach to Detroit. The plane landed at 10:16
a.m. local time.
