Pakistan downs a fighting Zimbabwe

SHARJAH, NOV. 1. Champion left-arm seamer Wasim Akram produced a lively burst to hand Pakistan a 29-run victory over Zimbabwe in the Champions Trophy here on Wednesday.

Zimbabwe was in sight of the 262-run target when a record third- wicket stand of 146 between the Flower brothers, Grant and Andy, lifted it to 159 for two in the 33rd over. Akram, however, turned the game around with a stunning return catch off Andy Flower (48), and three balls later had new batsman Dion Ebrahim caught behind by a diving Rashid Latif to make it 159 four.

Zimbabwe lost its last eight wickets for 73 runs to be bowled out for 232 as Akram finished with three for 19 and skipper Waqar Younis with three for 41.

The match held only academic interest in the three- nation event as Zimbabwe had already bowed out of contention by losing its three previous matches.
