Ban on sale of 'rocket' crackers
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, NOV. 9. All licensees in the Union Territory have
been instructed not to sell rocket-type crackers and violators
will face stringent penal action, the Pondicherry Divisional Fire
Officer, Mr. S.Vaithianathan, told newsmen here on Thursday.
Crackers flying into air from the ground were banned for reasons
of safety.
A list of `dos and donts' had been brought out by the fire
service department to highlight precautionary measures to be
taken in bursting crackers during Deepavali.
Mr.Vaithianathan said that there were reports that bulk purchases
of crackers had been made jointly by the people for sharing with
others, in order to minimise expenditure. But stocking of
crackers in bulk should not be done without licence.
The conditions attached to licences should be strictly adhered to
by merchants and keeping stocks in excess of the permitted level
would render the licensees liable for penal action. About 250
shops had been sanctioned licences to sell crackers.
Children should not be engaged in the establishments selling
crackers and there should be no display of crackers on pavements
and footpaths.
None should carry cracker parcels in buses, trains or any other
mode of transport. No cracker should be sent by any channel as
that would be risky.
