L & T leads rally in Sensex

MUMBAI, NOV. 9. Riding piggyback on a smart rally in a few old economy stocks, the Sensex made further progress on the Bombay Stock Exchange today on hectic buying support from investors.

Larsen & Toubro that led the price upsurge, hogged the limelight and was stuck in the 10 per cent upper circuit filter for the second successive day on sustained buy orders. Market sources said a leading player bought a sizable chunk of about 50 lakh shares of the counter.

The BSE benchmark 30-share index opened firm at 3070.58 and gradually moved upwards to the intra-day high of 3092.01 before closing at 3079.67 against yesterday's close of 3059.97, a net gain of 19.70 points. The broad-based BSE-100 index improved further by 8.29 points to 1437.06.

The news that the big bull Harshad Mehta and his two brothers were arrested by CBI, in a fresh case of `missing shares', partly affected sentiment after the midsession.

In the specified group, 114 including 19 index-based scrips registered sharp to moderate gains while 53 others closed with losses.
