Tolani Shipping's fightback in vain

By A Correspondent

MUMBAI, NOV. 9. A valiant fightback by Tolani Shipping was in vain, as it went down by just 9.5 IMPs to Jimmy Mehta's team in the quarterfinals of the Rs. one lakh prize money Tolani National Masters bridge championships at the Ashok Ruia Bridge Center, Andheri Sports Complex here on Friday.

Jimmy Mehta and team-mates Avinash Gokhale, Vinay Desai, Sunit Choksi and Raju Tolani, finished on top the qualifying table and chose to play Toani Shipping because of the 22.5 IMP carry over they enjoyed over the latter. The carry over was 50 per cent of the margin by which Mehta's team had defeated Tolani Shipping in the round robin league.

However, Mehta did not expect Tolani Shipping, comprising R.A. Agrawal, Gautam Biswas, Archie Sequeira, Raju Arondekar, Arvind Vaidya and Raju Bhiwandkar to put on such a fight and it was only due to the cushion of their carry over that they prevailed after the four rounds of 16 boards each.

In the semifinals, Mehta's team will take on Well Knit from Chennai, which defeated Ingersoll Rand by a massive margin of 59 IMPs.

The results (quarterfinals): Jimmy Mehta (Jimmy Mehta, Avinash Gokhale, Vinay Desai, Sunit Choksi and Raju Tolani) 136.5 IMPs (22.5 carryover) bt Tolani Shipping (R.A. Agrawal, Gautam Biswas, Archie Sequeira, Raju Arondekar, Arvind Vaidya and Raju Bhiwandkar.

Sunil Machhar (Sunil Machhar, Kamal Mukherjee, Kalpana Misra, Jitu Solani, Anil Padhye, Ratanlal Kejriwal) 105 bt Indian Railways B (Bijon De, Sujit Bhattacharjee, N.P. Kabiraj, Tapas Auddy, H. Hasan, Ashim Mukherjee) 64 (withdrawn).

Well Knit (C.R. Badrinath, R. Krishnan, P. Sridhar, S. Sunderam, Uttam Gupta, A.S. Viswanathan) 121 bt Ingersoll Rand (Anand K Samant, R Srisharan, Ajay Khare, Arun Bapat, Ajit Chakradeo, Vijay Phatarphekar) 62.

Indian Railays A (Saroj Bhattacharya, Snehasis Roy, Manas Mukherjee, Rana Roy, Amarnath Banerjee, Pritish Kushari) 148 bt India Blues (Ashok Ruia, J.M. Shah, P. Paranjpe, Vivek Bhand, D. Roy, K. Krishnamurthy) 95.
