CM to inaugurate workshop on cardiology
By Our Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD, NOV. 10. An international cardiology workshop,
being organised by the Cardiological Society of India (CSI) as
part of its 53rd conference here, will be inaugurated by the
Chief Minister, Mr. N. Chandrababu Naidu, here on December 7.
Nearly 4,000 cardiologists from all over the country and abroad
will attend the workshop focussed on interventional cardiology.
The rapid strides made in the realm of interventional cardiology
-- from plain balloon angioplasty to stenting, echo-cardiography
and other sub-specialities in cardiology would be discussed at
the four-day workshop.
A heart-run is being organised by the CSI on the eve of the
conference from Necklace Road to Ravindra Bharathi where a public
debate will take place on heart and health diet, the organising
secretary of the conference, Dr. Krishnam Raju, told reporters on
Saturday.
The annual CSI meeting is being held in Hyderabad for the fourth
time since the formation of the society. International faculty
from the U.S., the U.K., France, Italy, Australia. China and
other Asian countries would share their experience with Indian
cardiologists on the latest techniques of heart care.
The meet assumes significance in the wake of the alarming rise in
the incidence of heart diseases due to change in the lifestyles
and dietary habits, stress and other factors. About 10 per cent
of the urban population is suffering from heart ailments, a study
revealed.
The thrust areas of the workshop were explained by Dr. P.
Raghavaraju, Dr. Sastry, Dr. C. Narasimhan, Dr. N. Krishna Reddy,
consultant cardiologists of CARE Hospital, which boasts of one of
the largest cardiology groups in the country.
The hospital is organising a live workshop on interventional
cardiology as part of the conference. During the workshop, it is
also subsidising the procedures for the poor and needy patients,
Dr. B. Soma Raju, Chairman of the hospital, said.
Prevention of the heart disease, cost effective strategies to
make the diagnostic services and treatment of heart ailments
affordable would also figure in the deliberations.
Dr. Soma Raju said the procedures for heart care in India were
thoroughly underutilised. As against four lakh bypass
angioplasties conducted annually in America, India accounted for
only 20,000 angioplasties last year. More than four lakh bypass
surgeries were conducted in the U.S. compared to 45,000 in India.
The cost effective treatment strategies therefore assumed
importance, he explained.
