Child dies after vitamin dose
GUWAHATI, NOV. 12. One child died and over 1,500 children fell
ill in different parts of Assam after being administered free
doses of vitamin A solution syrup under a nationwide campaign on
Sunday.
The Joint Director of Health Services, Cachar, Dr. M. Ali, said
in Silchar today that Asah Bhedi, daughter of a tea labourer,
complained of giddiness and headache after she was given the
syrup. She died late last night.
About 1,000 children in the age group of one to five years
complained of headache, vomiting and diarrhoea in Cachar
district. Over 500 fell ill with symptoms of fever, stomach pain
and vomiting in Nagaon.
Nearly 100 were affected in north Haibargaon and 400 in
Bapapujia, Kaki, Lanka and Jugijan area, according to official
sources.
The district administration had ordered a magisterial inquiry and
the vitamin sample was sent for investigations.
