Govt. toeing World Bank line, says CPI
By Our Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD, NOV. 12. The two-day convention of the CPI State
Committee held here on November 10 and 11 warned the Government
of stiff resistance to the constitution of Water Regulatory
Commission and privatisation of water supply.
Addressing a press conference here on Monday, Mr. S. Sudhakar
Reddy, secretary of the committee, said protests would be held on
November 21 in all municipal towns to explain to people the World
Bank agenda that the Government was following.
The meet called for a comprehensive development package for
Telangana with Rs. 5,000-crore fund and asked the Government to
concede all demands on pending projects in the region.
It alleged misuse of the Food-for-work programme and said ruling
party leaders and contractors were behind several irregularities.
Another demand was direct purchase of maize and paddy by the
Government and the FCI to help farmers get the MSP.
The meeting said that both the Central and State Governments were
reducing subsidies on agricultural implements while the latter
was unable to supply even pesticides. At least 18 farmers had
died because they had not been told how to use pesticides, the
meeting said. It demanded Rs. 1 lakh ex gratia to the families of
``pesticide victims.''
The meeting urged people to hold meetings against POTO and
condemn the ``meek submission'' of the Government at the WTO meet
at Doha. It cautioned people against Hindu fundamentalists
designs in the country in branding all Muslims terrorists and
creating anti-Muslim feeling.
The party meeting would be held at Guntur between March 9 and 12,
2002. The national meet would be held in Kerala between March 26-
29.
