Whither intelligentsia?

Sir, - This has reference to Mr. Kuldip Nayar's prescription to the RSS chief, Mr. K. S. Sudharshan, (Nov. 9). Setting aside the issue of reinterpreting the principles of our major religions, namely Hinduism, Christianity and Islam, we must look at this problem from a down-to-earth angle. The day-to-day lives of ordinary people of various communities are intertwined - a fact theoreticians such as Mr. Sudharshan have ignored.

The various wings of the Sangh Parivar are trying to destroy the social fabric under the wrong notion that a monolithic culture will be the pride of our nation. This goes against the tenets of co-existence and harmonious living.

Unfortunately, the Indian intelligentsia is not active in expressing its opinions. Continued indifference on its part only encourages radical elements to propagate dangerous doctrines which cut at the very roots of the unity of our country. Doctors, engineers, teachers, businessmen and agriculturists who form the core of the middle-class must come forward to voice their opinions in unambiguous ways to say that they prefer good neighbourliness to imaginary religious superiority.

M.F.I. Joseph Kumar,

Kumbakonam, T.N.
