Assam Govt. orders probe
By Our Special Correspondent
GUWAHATI, NOV. 13. The Assam Government today ordered an official
probe into a case of death and hundreds of cases of sickness
caused in children in the State following administering of
vitamin A drops on Sunday, as part of a UNICEF-sponsored anti-
blindness drive.
Addressing mediapersons at the Janata Bhavan, the State Health
Minister, Dr. Bhumidhar Barman, insisted that the sickness and
death must have been caused by an overdose.
While 25 lakh children were given the dose on Sunday, only 716
were ``affected'' and just one girl, the two-year-old Asha Bagchi
of Lavok Tea Estate in Barak Valley, had died.
