By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, NOV. 13. Four teenaged girls were killed when the Tata Sumo van in which they were travelling overturned after dashing against a tree felled in Harohalli Police Station limits in Bangalore Rural District on Tuesday. Eight others, who were travelling in the van, were seriously injured.

Police said they were students of first and second year diploma course in Sri Jayachamarajendra Polytechnic, and had gone to the Sangama in Kanakapura taluk on a picnic. The mishap took place near Gabadi village, three km. from Harohalli, when they were returning to Bangalore.

The van, which was moving at a high speed on the wrong side of the road, dashed against the huge trunk of a tree. The impact of the collision was such that it got tossed up in the air and came to a halt after hitting the branches of another tree, an eye- witness told The Hindu.

Ms. Anitha and Ms. Sangeetha were crushed to death instantaneously, while Ms. Apali and Ms. Sahana died on the way to hospital. The injured have been admitted to Victoria Hospital and NIMHANS.

The vehicle was totally damaged, and its driver, Rajashekar, who escaped unhurt, ran away from the scene.

The Harohalli police have registered a case. Senior police officers rushed to the spot and supervised rescue operations.
