Children's film festival begins today

HYDERABAD, NOV. 13. A total of 162 films will be screened as part
of the 12th International Children's Film Festival that begins in
the City on Wednesday. The Chief Minister, Mr. N. Chandrababu
Naidu, will inaugurate the week-long festival at the Lalitha Kala
Thoranam, Public Gardens.
The Film Festival Directorate received more than 200 films from
41 countries, out of which 162 films were finally selected for
screening in nine different venues, including seven theatres.
These films, which include feature, short and animation, were
chosen by a preview committee comprising 25 members. The
different sections in which these movies are to be screened are
International Competition (74 films), Asian Panorama (12) and
Children's World (76).
Several prominent film-making centres from all over the world,
including Australia, Canada, Uruguay, U.S., Denmark, Russia,
Switzerland, Iran, Malaysia, Japan and Sri Lanka, are
participating in the festival. Under the Retros and Tributes
section, films made by Bruno Bozzetto and Dr. Zainab Zamzam have
been scheduled. The award-winning film, `Do Ankhen Baarah Haat',
will be screened as a homage to legendary film-maker, V.
Shantaram, apart from screening of `Chairy Tale' and `Opening
Speech' as a homage to the Canadian film-maker, Norman McLaren.
The other sections include screenings under `Flaherty and
Children' and `Children of Neo-Realism'.
The film festival will also be marked with a series of seminars
and workshops. The UNICEF is holding a three-day seminar on
`Rights Of The Child', which is expected to be attended by child
delegates and child rights activists from all over the country.
Films and videos made by children of different countries have
also been made a part of the festival by the Auburn International
Film and Video Festival.
While the International Main Jury is headed by noted film-maker,
Mr. D.V.S. Raju, the Asian Panorama Jury is chaired by author-
poet, Mr. Seshendra Sharma, and the International Critics Jury is
headed by Ms. Annick Chapoy from France.
The theatres participating in the Children's Film Festival are:
Santosh and Sapna (Abids), Tarakarama (Kacheguda crossroad),
Sashikala (Moosapet), Sudha (Shalibanda), Metro (Bahadurpura),
Raghavendra (Malkajgiri) and Vishnu (Vanasthalipuram). Films will
also be screened at Hari Hara Kala Bhavan and Lalitha Kala
Thoranam.
