New telecom facilities hailed

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, NOV. 16. The Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FAPCCI) has hailed the decisions and recommendations of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and the Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL), regarding introduction of several new facilities in the metros.

In a statement here on Friday, Mr. Suraj Prasad Agarwal, Chairman of Posts and Telecom Committee, FAPCCI, welcomed measures like BSNL's Deepavali offer of a second telephone line on payment of Re. 1 to existing subscribers in certain regions of A.P., including Hyderabad.

The `Managed Lease Line Network' in Hyderabad by BSNL would enable faster access to Internet and alternate routing in case of any route failure. It would also improve the quality of videoconferencing facility, he said.

The TRAI recommendation for unlimited competition in the International Long Distance service from April 2002, breaks the monopoly, benefiting users and enhancing efficiency, he said. However, the condition of one time entry fee of Rs.25 crores and Rs.25 crores bank guarantee, annual licence fee of 15 per cent of gross revenue would scare away potential applicants, he felt.
