Karshaka Cong. to stage Parliament march
By Our Staff Reporter
KANNUR, NOV. 16. The Kerala Pradesh Karshaka Congress (KPKC) will
stage a Parliament march on December 20 to demand withdrawal of
`anti-farmer' policies of the Union Government.
In a press release here today, the KPKC State general secretary,
Mr. M.C. Jose, said the march would be preceded by preparation of
a mass petition signed by 10 lakh farmers to be sent to the Prime
Minister, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee. Signature mobilisation
campaigns would be conducted by KPKC activists by visiting
farmers' households during the 15 days beginning December 1.
He said the Central Government, which had fixed minimum declared
price for rubber, had the obligation to ensure that rubber
growers got that price. The Government was yet to announce the
minimum price for rubber, thereby favouring rubber
industrialists. The Kumarakom package announced by the Prime
Minister also remained unimplemented. The Central Government
should offer financial assistance to the tune of Rs. 1,000 crores
to help farmers who were already reeling under the price fall.
He welcomed the debt relief measures taken by the State
Government to alleviate the problems facing the farming
community.
